The UK Ancestry visa route is for a Commonwealth citizen aged 17 or over who wants to live and work in the UK and who has a grandparent who was born in the UK or Islands. A dependent partner and dependent children of UK Ancestry migrant can also apply under this route to stay in the UK with the UK Ancestry migrant. You can apply for extension of your UK Ancestry visa for 5 years if you are in the UK with UK Ancestry visa and do not qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as a UK Ancestry Migrant. - has broken their continuity of residence and so cannot meet the 5-year continuous residence requirement for settlement
- simply does not wish to apply for settlement, or is unaware that they are eligible to do so
You can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as a UK Ancestry migrant upon completion of 5 years residence in the UK under UK Ancestry visa. Your qualifying period can include time from the date your initial application (for entry clearance or leave to remain) was approved.
