The Student Visa route is designed for individuals aged 16 or over who wish to study in the UK with an approved sponsor. This visa allows you to undertake courses in further or higher education, a pre-sessional English language course, a recognised foundation programme, or to take up an elected position as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer.
Applicants aged 16 or 17 who intend to study with a sponsor that is an Independent School on a course at Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) Level 3 or Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) Level 6 or above can apply either as a Student or under the Child Student Visa category, depending on their specific circumstances (see Appendix Child Student of the Immigration Rules).
It is important to note that the Student Visa is not a direct route to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain). However, any time spent in the UK under this visa category does count towards the 10-year long residence route, which can lead to settlement if you meet the continuous residence requirements.
If you are outside the UK, you can apply for Student Visa Entry Clearance to come to the UK and study with an education provider approved by the Home Office (UKVI).
If you are already in the UK on a different type of visa, you may be eligible to switch to a Student Visa from within the UK, subject to meeting the relevant requirements.
Additionally, if you are already in the UK on a Student Visa, you can apply to extend your Student Visa from inside the UK to continue your studies or enrol in a new course with a UKVI-approved education provider.
